FIBERGLASS REINFORCED PLASTICS
Since the reinforced plastic was created in 1940, this has acquired prestige for its exceptional qualities, the “Reinforced plastic” is the result from the combination of a thermofixed resin and a reinforcement material and the resulting laminated from this combination has characteristics of both products, such as anticorrosive resistance and weather protection, as well as great mechanical resistance in consideration of its low weight compared to the metals, wood and thermoplastics: materials that were replaced by reinforced plastic in the tanks manufacturing.
The more commonly used thermofixed resins are the polyester resins in different types such as the bisfenolic, chlorendic, isophtalic and orthopthalic (general purpose). As well as other resin families such as epoxy, furanic, phenolic and vinylester.
Regarding to reinforcement materials, fiberglass is generally used in all its different types as roving, mat, woven roving and surface veil, and the synthetic fibers as polyester, dacron and others. Also, natural fibers and carbon fibers are used but less frequently.
The reinforced plastic is a composite material of easy molding inclusive for difficult geometric shapes, is lightweight and has a great mechanical and anticorrosive resistance and weather protection, is inexpensive compared to similar characteristics materials.
The Limitations of the reinforced plastic regarding temperature, pressure, corrosion and abrasion should be taken into account just like in others materials, these limitations will regulate the selection criteria.
